Reviews for Cleaning and Maintaining Modern and Antique Firearms

Although I have been shooting and cleaning both modern and black powder guns for many years, I learned a lot from reading this small book. There is very good advice in the ‘legal considerations’ chapter that would protect many a licence holder. Cleaning products and tools and comprehensively covered, but the author also talks about everything from black powder, through air rifles and shotguns, to centrefire military rifles. He also touches on recording and marking your guns — a subject most owners, I would think, don’t consider. It is not a manual on how to restore a badly-damaged antique gun, but it does advise on most work and materials with which to maintain and carry out small repairs. Overall, this book is an interesting read and would help any firearms owner.

What an absolute gem this 100-page pocket-sized manual from Quiller Publishing is, and what better time than the start of the British game bird shooting season to release it. This well-produced, succinct manual covers the cleaning and maintenance of the main categories of firearms: shotguns, sporting rifles, air rifles, ex-military rifles and black powder firearms, as well as hints on restoring antique and vintage guns. The text and explanations are easy to follow and the clear colour photos augment the book nicely. I also like how the back few pages are reserved for personal notes – something all firearm owners and tinkers will certainly appreciate. Highly recommended for novice and more experienced firearm owners alike.
