The perfect book for anyone considering establishing and running their own smallholding. Packed with helpful hints and advice for each season.

‘Free-Range and Flourishing: The Smallholder's Year’ by Allison Lee

Many people want to run their own smallholding but wonder how easy it is and what exactly is involved. Free-range and Flourishing: The Smallholder’s Year offers valuable guidance to anyone seeking to embrace this aspect of rural life. Unlike farming, a smallholding doesn’t require acres of land making it a far more accessible option.

Author and smallholder Allison Lee provides hints and advice on growing fruit and vegetables, raising various animals, and encouraging wildlife. Drawing on her own experience she focuses on topics from choosing the right field shelters, fencing and equipment, to caring for donkeys, ponies, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens.

Covering a year in the life of a smallholder, this book will encourage readers to be mindful of the seasons and enable them to understand the essential jobs that must be done all year round to keep livestock safe and healthy and the land productive.

All manner of equines helped build our roads, our villages, towns and cities.

‘The Horse Lover's Miscellany: Wit, Wisdom and Wonders’ by J. C. Jeremy Hobson

A miscellany of equestrian delights including famous horses in history, work horses, showjumping, dressage, equestrian artists, war horses, carriage driving, racehorses and many more.

The author focuses on many aspects; from equine ancestry to equine epitaphs; from dressage to showjumping; carriage driving to ploughing matches; pony clubs to polo and much more besides. It’s an eclectic mix of fact, moving tales of endurance in the harshest conditions, eccentricity, quotes, amusing anecdotes and ‘I never knew that’ snippets from both times past and the present day.

A superb collection of Annie Tempest's brilliant and humorous cartoons depicting the Totterings as they grapple with ageing and the countless challenges of 21st-century life.

‘Twilight Years with the Totterings’ by Annie Tempest

The struggle with the generation gap and the wokerati is a dynamic always at play at Tottering Hall. In this latest book, Annie Tempest has brought together her favourite cartoons on the subject of growing older in a fast, glitchy and disrupted world where everything the aged Tottering types do is translated into a boomer meme to be giggled at. Unapologetically, the Totterings grapple with the new order of social media, mindfulness and ‘me-time’, while continuing to hold out for meat, two veg and Chianti, over tahini, tofu and kombucha.

A compassionate, fact-based examination of the incredibly complex and extraordinarily divisive issue of too many horses, not enough homes.

‘Unwanted: The Causes and Effects of America's Horse Population Crisis’ by Christina Keim

Any horse, but for a change of circumstances, can become unwanted.

The US equine industry consistently produces more horses each year than the number of appropriate homes, leaving thousands of animals with nowhere to go. Recently, as many as 150,000 of these horses have shipped annually to equine slaughterhouses in Canada, Mexico, and abroad. Others are sold at auction, given away, starved, abused, and abandoned. Just over 1,000 rescues and municipal organizations across the country equipped to handle horses at risk report they are consistently close to or at capacity. Most are stretched to the breaking point when it comes to finances, material resources, and human power.

Unwanted asks all of us to examine our unconscious and deeply held beliefs about horses, while suggesting ways to better understand how that perspective shapes our opinion about how they—and other non-human animals—should be treated. For there to be hope for a restorative and harmonious solution to the unwanted horse crisis, Keim professes, we must be ready to come to the table well informed, open-minded, and prepared to work for the horse’s best interests, rather than our own.

The horse owner’s go-to guide in an emergency, when you need information and guidance you can trust.

‘What to Do Until the Vet Arrives: Emergency Care for Horses’ by Nancy S. Loving

Most horse owners know that injury and illness can be part of life with an equine in your care. Veterinarians, farriers, and urgent care clinics are usually on speed dial—just in case. But there may come a time when you’re faced with an emergency health crisis when professional care is difficult to access. When that happens, what should you do for your horse while you’re both waiting for help to arrive?

As a responsible horse owner, you always want to do what’s best for your horse. This is the book we all need to ensure we can do just that.

A memoir of building a life around hospitality and horseback riding, and the delicate dance of creating happiness for others and finding it for oneself.

‘To Borrow Freedom: Riding Down a Dream on the Coast of Portugal’ by Sheila Greenfield

Starting out with nothing but a tent, a couple of dogs, five horses, and a lot of energy, Sheila Greenfield and her husband Robert set out to build their dream: a company that provided high-end horseback riding vacations, based in the Lower Alentejo, along Portugal's idyllic southwestern coast. The couple bought an ancient and run-down farm in a remote area of the region's nature park and worked to transform it into a popular lifestyle hotel—a horseback rider's paradise.

Determined to promote the most natural methods of horse care, Greenfield found conscientious tools and practices that promoted her horses' well-being while enhancing their natural versatility, endurance, courage, and generosity. The result was fit, happy, independently minded horses who gave their all to their riders. And it was this that became the heart of their company's successful business model.

The result is a beautiful book, daring in its richness of detail and generous in its authenticity, certain to be enjoyed by all those who love adventure, or travel, or horses, or profoundly unique stories of coming together and coming undone.
