R. W. Morland-Hughes

R. W. Morland-Hughes was born in London on 25 April 1911 into a family with strong Army tradition. He attended Dover College, where his abysmal spelling prevented academic advancement. Denied normal entry into the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, but determined to be a soldier he joined, on becoming seventeen, the local branch of the Territorial Army, the 4th Battalion the Buffs (East Kent Regiment) as a private soldier.
