Ernest Hemingway is a mythic writer and alpha male. As a hunter and conservationist, he drew greatly from the strong example of Theodore Roosevelt, and he much enjoyed teaching newcomers to shoot and hunt. He was a member of his high-school gun club and went to war when he was 18.

Following years of research, this volume significantly expands what we know about Hemingway’s shotguns, rifles, and pistols—the tools of the trade that proved themselves in his hunting and in his writing Including short excerpts from Hemingway’s works, these stories of his guns and rifles tell us as much about him as a lifelong, expert hunter and shooter and as a man.

Move over Mr Chips. Kidson had everything that central casting requires of a legendary schoolmaster: a passion for his subject, a brilliant didactic style, a silly walk, a smelly spaniel, breath-taking rudeness, eccentric mannerisms and catchphrases, a maverick attitude towards authority, and above all, a deep empathy, loyalty and dedication towards his boys. He had an extraordinary influence on his pupils – David Cameron, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Johnnie Boden, Nicky Henderson, Sir Matthew Pinsent, ‘Lupin’ and Dominic West among them.

If there is one name in the American equestrian story that everyone knows, it is George Morris – a horse lover, rider, carouser, competitor, taskmaster, dreamer, teacher, and visionary, George Morris has been ever-present on the rarified stage of the international riding elite for most of the 70 years he has been in the saddle. He has represented the USA as an athlete and a coach and, at one time or another, instructed many of the USA’s nation’s best horsemen and women.
This engrossing autobiography, the real story of George Morris, beautifully demonstrates his ultimate humanity.

  7. My Racing Certainties
    £18.00
    2015-11-17 00:00:00

In the racing game much is credited to jockeys, trainers and of course horses. Hardly a ‘name’ in either category lacks newspaper features, full blown biographies or TV exposure – and quite right too. As for the owners... They get their names printed on the race cards and appear at racecourse presentations – but that’s about it. Not a lot, considering they pay through the nose for the privilege of owning, training and often breeding the horses.

My Racing Certainties does its bit to redress the balance – and in a most entertaining way. The author has been an owner since the 1950s and although he says he’d be a much richer man if he’d never caught sight of a racehorse he, like so many other owners, would not have missed the roller coaster ride for anything.
